Wreck It Ralph Ideology & Grand Narrative
WIR presents 3 grand narratives, all ideology that is presented by a western and predominately american world. WIR follows modernistic ideology of Freedom, Christianity and Democracy.
Freedom
Characters from various games are allowed to cross over into other games, allowing them total freedom when the game is not being played. They do this via the extension lead that all games are plugged into. Characters can interact and play within other games but they must be careful as they will not re-spawn if they die. This presents freedom within a society and an overall democratic way of life, rules are presented and followed. A game must not cross over to another game when being played as this creates a scenario called 'Turbo', ultimately ending in the game being shut down.
Christianity
Although boundaries between characters are deconstructed an overall reference and narrative to christianity is very prominent. The narrative is how ralph longs to be a hero and to do this he must sacrifice himself for the one he cares for and the whole arcade. This relates to the idea of Jesus sacrificing himself for a cause and what he believed was right, a western idea of a hero's path. This has been the ideological view of a hero in modern times, though Propps theories we can show how a hero must always prevail.
Democracy/Anti-Monarchy
The third key 'Grand Narrative' is the idea of democracy and the collapsing of monarchs. American is the land of the free and home to brave and prides itself on its democratical way of life, much like WIR. ALthough in one game 'Sugar Rush' a monarchy is present an overall king/queen rule, they are elected but born or in this case coded into royalty. At the end when Vanellope the princess is transformed into the Queen she choses to resign and for the land of sugar rush to be equal and free, much like other games and of course like America. America are very anti-monarhcy and the narrative of a monarchy being broken down to form a democracy is the perfect ideology for a western world.
All narratives and structures work to overall morality and ideological views that the American way of life is in fact the dream. The idea of freedom, willing to fight for your freedom and being able to have your say is the dream.
